Something about the first point here (1) feels very deliberate. That was put as the first point for a reason, the highest priority and the geopolitical trigger point to get this deal done?

'KoBold and AVZ are advance the peace process by having reached consensus as to a commercial framework enabling the rapid development of the Manono deposit.'

The phrase 'advancing the peace process' implies to me KoBold playing a diplomatic role, potentially being involved in the peace discussions with Rwanda. As much as this is politicised, let's be real, a lot of this conflict is related to resource extraction. Therefor, is it reasonable to assume our deal is wrapped up in the peace negotiation?

I read it differently . Kobold is the new big dog in town . It's arrival on the scene demonstrates a confidence /support of a pathway to peace between DRC/Rwanda .

"Kobold and AVZ would be honoured to support the announcement of agreement concerning peace and security in any way ."

There is no order of events in these statements . IMO

The question remains . Does the Kobold /AVZ deal being finalized hinge on the peace deal ? I don't think it does . IMO

You're probably right. I've been looking at the same information for far too long, starting to imagine things.

A new announcement to digest would be nice.

Joint Statement on Peace Talks between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda, Mediated by the United States and Observed by the State of Qatar

MEDIA NOTE
OFFICE OF THE SPOKESPERSON
JUNE 18, 2025

The text of the following statement was released by the Governments of the United States of America, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Republic of Rwanda on the occasion of peace talks held this week in Washington, D.C.

Begin text:

On June 18, 2025, technical teams from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda initialed the text of the Peace Agreement, witnessed by U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker, in preparation for the Ministerial signing of the Peace Agreement on June 27, 2025, to be witnessed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Building on the Declaration of Principles signed on April 25, 2025, the Agreement was developed over three days of constructive dialogue regarding political, security, and economic interests. The Agreement includes provisions on respect for territorial integrity and a prohibition of hostilities; disengagement, disarmament, and conditional integration of non-state armed groups; establishment of a Joint Security Coordination Mechanism that incorporates the CONOPS of October 31, 2024; facilitation of the return of refugees and internally displaced persons, as well as humanitarian access; and a regional economic integration framework.

As part of the ongoing coordination between the facilitation efforts of the United States of America and the State of Qatar, the State of Qatar participated in these discussions to ensure complementarity and alignment between both countries’ initiatives aimed at dialogue and peace in the region. Both the DRC and Rwanda expressed their appreciation for the valuable contributions and joint efforts of the United States and Qatar as partners in advancing a peaceful resolution.

We look forward to the subsequent Summit of the Heads of State in Washington, D.C. to further advance peace, stability, and economic prosperity in the Great Lakes region.

End text.

Kobold aren't the new big dog in town. They are nothing but a marketing experiment at this point, all bark, no bite. They have no runs on the board, no signature projects, just a bunch of rich backers. They want this project to make them the big dog in town. If they don't come out on top then they will look right foolish.
Kobold want you to think this is a one horse race and they are our saviours, but Tim will tell if this is the case, or just a lot of hot air.

AVZ have signed an MOU with Kobold and agreed to sell it's interest to them . Kobold were on site at Manono in August /Sept last year . This could not have happened without DRC permission . So I think they are a little more than a dog with no bite . IMO

I'm with @Mute22 in that after all the BS we've been through, even though in my head I'm almost 100% sure this will happen soon enough, my heart refuses to believe anything good will come, but that's basically trauma response, and this has been traumatic as fuck.

I wonder if another key person will die in Germany before next Friday...

But if all goes ahead we will know by next Saturday and it should be a cheerful evening :)
Cheers to an end to this mess!

Is the peace deal one and the same as the minerals for security deal? I thought they were two seperate things.

No mention of minerals here.

If nothing has changed it appears the peace and the minerals deals were to be signed on the same day.

Exclusive: US pushes Congo, Rwanda for peace accord and billion-dollar mineral deals

M23 officials attend at the opening ceremony of CADECO in Goma

Members of the M23 rebel group mount their vehicles after the opening ceremony of Caisse Generale d'epargne du Congo in Goma, North Kivu province in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

DOHA, May 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. is pushing Congo and Rwanda to sign a peace accord at the White House in about two months, accompanied by bilateral mineral deals that would bring billions of dollars of Western investment to the region, President Donald Trump's senior advisor for Africa told Reuters on Thursday.

"When we sign the peace agreement ... the minerals deal with the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) will be signed on that day, and then a similar package, but of a different size, will be signed on that day with Rwanda," Massad Boulos said in an interview in the Qatari capital, Doha.

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

A U.S.-backed peace accord would come amid an unprecedented advance by Rwandan-backed M23 rebels in Congo, the latest cycle of violence in a decades-long conflict, in a region rich in minerals including tantalum and gold. Rwanda denies backing the group.

Rwanda and Congo are expected to submit separate drafts of a peace agreement on Friday, according to a peace process agreed in Washington last week as part of diplomatic efforts to end violence in eastern Congo.

The Congolese government did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

In mid-May U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet in Washington with the Rwandan and Congolese foreign ministers in an effort to agree on a final draft peace accord, Boulos said.

But before that accord can be signed, Boulos said, Rwanda and Congo must finalise bilateral economic agreements with Washington that will see U.S. and Western companies invest billions of dollars in Congolese mines and infrastructure projects to support mining in both countries including the processing of minerals in Rwanda.

"The (agreement) with the D.R.C. is at a much bigger scale, because it's a much bigger country and it has much more resources, but Rwanda also has a lot of resources and capacities and potential in the area of mining as well ... not just the upstream, but also midstream and downstream to processing and refining and trading," Boulos said.

Boulos said U.S. and Western companies have told Washington they would make multi-billon dollar investments in the region once the bilateral minerals deals are signed.

Boulos also said before the White House signing ceremony can go ahead, Washington expects both countries to address a number of security concerns. For example, Rwanda must pull its troops out of Congo and end its support for M23 rebels. Congo must address Rwanda's security concerns with militias such as the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).

Boulos said that on Wednesday a follow-up committee was appointed to monitor both countries' progress towards the peace deal, which includes the U.S., Qatar, France and Togo, which is representing the African Union.
